In February the Sustainable Development Unit of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) released their vision for a sustainable healthcare system by 2050. Ideally this ambitious vision should be guidance for hospitals and healthcare centres to reduce their impact on the environment everywhere in Europe and beyond. The vision sets out where we want to be by 2050 and together with the supporting documents gives tools how to become a low carbon and sustainable organisation in terms of energy, waste, procurement and travel. What it needs now is health leaders together with staff to turn the vision into a reality. Just a month later the EU Commission released their ‘2050 Low Carbon Roadmap’ for Europe. Two documents, but the differences could not be more apparent. The Commission document suggests stepping up European emission cuts to 25% by 2020. This would mean that Europe would need to meet its energy efficiency target. But scientists tell us that even a 25% reduction will almost certainly lead to a global temperature increase of more than 2 degrees. To avoid this tipping point more ambitious goals need to be set. It will be the health systems across Europe that will have to deal with the impact of climate change. Time for the Commission to be inspired by other initiatives, such as the NHS vision. And time for the healthcare sector to voice concern and demand ambitious targets, be it from our own governments or the Commission.

We hope you will be inspired by the news we bring to you and that you will share your stories with us. As usual, please let us know what you want to have featured or send us your information for our next newsletter.

Best wishes from Anja

Public Hearing on Endocrine–Disrupting Chemicals: From Ambition to Action

Brussels: Public Hearing on Endocrine–Disrupting Chemicals: From Ambition to Action
3 May 2011

The EU is in deadlock on EDCs. There is no established definition of what counts as an endocrine disruptor and no process for addressing their presence in consumer goods and the environment. Both are essential to effective regulation. ChemSec has organised a Public Hearing and is releasing their new Chemical SIN list 2.0.   register here

Stockholm County Council’s Reduce Their Impact on the Climate Through Procurement of New PCs
Stockholm County Council’s Reduce Their Impact on the Climate Through Procurement of New PCs

Stockholm County Council aims to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from the use of personal computers by more than 40 percent. The amount of hazardous substances will also be reduced by 8.000 kg, when multiple environmental and health hazardous chemicals in the computers will be phased out. This is thanks to high environmental standards in the procurement of new personal computers.

Stockholm County Council currently has around 40.000 PCs. As they are replaced, major environmental benefits as well as cost savings will be made. It is estimated that the full effect of the agreement will be reached at the turn of 2014/2015.

"We want to send a strong signal to the market that environmental performance is important and that it is possible to combine environmental and economic sustainability", says Jan Zetterdahl, IT Director, Stockholm County Council.

Requirements concerning energy consumption, the use of recycled plastics in new products and information about the weight of the products were made in the tender documentation. All computers are Energy Star labelled and each monitor is TCO–certified. In addition, requirements were made to phase out lead, mercury, halogenated flame retardants and PVC in the computers. With an estimate that every personal computer contains an average of 2 kg of these substances, 8.000 kg hazardous substances will be phased out. The winning supplier, Dell, fulfilled all the chemical requirements.

"High environmental requirements in procurement are one of the best ways to reduce environmental impact, as environmentally harmful products never enter the business. Just this procurement reduces the County Council's carbon emissions by 2000 tons", says Anna Linusson, Head of Environmental Department, Stockholm County Council.
