As hundreds of different active pharmaceutical compounds are being discovered in waterways all over the world, concern is increasing about the harm these might be doing to human health and the environment. Usually when discussing the problem of pharmaceuticals in the environment, the debate stays on the costs of downstream solutions, neglecting other types of solutions that have been put into practice in different countries and that contribute to prevent the entrance of pharmaceuticals in the environment.
Health Care Without Harm Europe identified a need for finding and sharing quality information around this issue. Access to reliable information is essential to raise awareness and educate the general public on the impacts of these substances in the environment. The objective of this project is to create an open-access centre of resources to increase public understanding of the issues revolving around pharmaceuticals in the environment and to highlight ways to reduce their impact by promoting critical thinking, education, and informed citizenship.
