WHO Resolution on Antimicrobial Drug Resistance Approved

Brussels, 26 May 2014 – Health Care Without Harm Europe welcomes the approval of the resolution on antimicrobial drug resistance at the 67th World Health Assembly in Geneva on 24 May 2014.

Delegates recognised that antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat and urged Member States to take national action and to collaborate internationally to prevent this. The resolution states that WHO will now develop a global action plan to be submitted for approval at the next World Health Assembly in 2016.

"We need European countries to be proactive in increasing awareness among health providers and the pubic about this", said HCWH Europe Director Anja Leetz.

"More data is needed on where and how antibiotics are used for both human and veterinary medicine and measures should be applied to prevent drug resistant infections. Only a concerted effort can avoid a global health catastrophe."
