Europe’s 2021 Health Care Climate Champions

Thirteen European healthcare institutions are among the 2021 Climate Champions of the Health Care Climate Challenge. The Challenge awards healthcare institutions that are at the forefront of the transformation to climate-smart healthcare.

Over the last two years, we saw the healthcare sector and healthcare professionals standing with bravery and perseverance on the front lines of the pandemic to treat and protect their communities. While serving in this demanding and difficult time, hospitals, health systems, and healthcare facilities around the world are remaining steadfast and elevating their commitments and efforts to address an unparalleled threat to public and environmental health: climate change.

Hospitals and health centres from all over the world participated in the 2021 Health Care Climate Challenge Awards in the categories of Leadership, Mitigation, and Resilience, with over 50 winners from 14 countries.

These Health Care Climate Champions are stepping up as global leaders in the transformation to a sustainable, Climate-smart healthcare sector. They are setting ambitious targets to mitigate their emissions and achieving remarkable progress towards these goals. They are working with their facilities and communities to stand resilient to a changing climate. They are using their voice and purchasing power to advocate for climate action and low carbon economies.

We commend and applaud their commitments and achievements and look forward to their continued success and that of all the participants of our Health Care Climate Challenge.
